A BRIEF HISTORY OF MALAYSIAN MMA
2011 - Melvin Yeoh, a schoolteacher, started teaching MMA in Ultimate MMA Academy in Johor Bahru, Johor, Malaysia.
2012 - First MMA event in Malaysia organised by Ultimate MMA Academy known as Ultimate Beatdown. MMA shows in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysian
Fighting Championship and F3 Fighting Championship were also organised.
2013 - ONE Fighting Championship from Singapore organised the first professional MMA show in Malaysia drawing a full house crowd at Stadium
Negara in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Legend Fighting Championship (HK) also hosted an event in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Both promotions
featured Malaysian professional MMA fighters.
2013 - Malaysian Invasion (MIMMA) Season 1 organised by Tune Talk Sdn Bhd began its' first season, bringing together the top amateur MMA
athletes from around the country through nine months of intense competition. First MIMMA champions crowned in seven weight classes.
2013 - MASMMAA is formed under the purview of Ministry of Youth & Sports Malaysia and affliated to the International MMA Federation.
2014- MIMMA began 2nd season with successful nationwide tryouts. Local MMA promotions, Ultimate Beatdown and F3 Championships produced
regular shows. New promotions Warrior Fighting Championship and Jesselton Fight League organised their debut shows to great success. ONE
Fighting Championship featured even more Malaysian MMA fighters. Malaysia became 1st Southeast asian nation to send a national MMA
team to the inaugural IMMAF World Championships in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA. Prof Adam Shahir Kayoom became 1st and only Malaysian
MMA athlete to go into a main event to contest for a world MMA championship at ONE: Warrior Spirit.
2015- Malaysian amateur champions Keanu Subba, Muhd Aiman & Agilan Thani sign to world class MMA promotions. Ann Osman first Malaysian
MMA women fighter to be featured on TIME magazine and made significant breakthrough for Asian women's MMA fighters. MIMMA
introduced new divisions crowning country's 1st ever foreign champion (Ahmadjon Karimov-Tajikistan) and local women's champion in
Joanna Yap.
Malaysians Melvin Yeoh, Isaac Yap & Ringo Coldenhoff refereed in foreign amateur event in Singapore.
Aziz Alias became first Malaysian pro MMA judge at ONE Championship.
