What is Mixed Martial Arts
Mixed Martial Arts is a modern full contact combat sport incorporating the best blends of different styles of martial arts which allow striking, grappling and submission techniques within a defined competition and judging rules set . This form of combat sport is known today as Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) and is generally acknowledged to be the fastest growing sport in the world.
There are a multitude of well structured and well organised MMA events held worldwide for both amateur and professional MMA fighters.
MMA bouts take place inside a sanctioned cordoned fighting area which is usually a ring or a cage. A licensed bout is overseen by an official inside the cage known as the referee while three neutral officials known as judges will adjudge the bout. A cage inspector and a medical team are always on standby to ensure the fairness of the bouts and the safety of the fighters.
Different rules would apply for the amateur and professional MMA bouts in terms of fight equipment, competition rules, and duration of the bout.
Different MMA promotions may adopt different MMA rules sets for their fights and the judging criterias, of which the Unified Rules of MMA ('Unified Rules') are presently the most popular.
